You arrive from a quiet village road that gives little sign of what waits behind it. The land rises gently from the entrance, and the approach uses that rise: a slow transition from road to private world, until the trees close over and the house comes into view. Inside, the plan is open and unforced. Kitchen, dining and living run together and give onto a covered terrace, with water and garden held close — the threshold sits level and wide, so the line between inside and out barely exists.
Three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, are placed for quiet: rest at one end, guests at the other, every room looking into canopy. A separate staff quarters with a chef's kitchen, utility room, bedroom and bathroom sits apart, with its own access, so the house runs without intrusion.
The villa stays cool on its own terms — orientation, deep overhangs, cross-ventilation and honest materials do the work before anything mechanical is asked to. Mature trees are kept wherever the design allows; new planting is chosen for this climate. The house draws its own water and a share of its own power.
Sevana, Midigama — Sri Lanka
Sevana sits on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, in the village of Midigama. This is the quieter stretch of the south, a former fishing settlement the wider world has largely passed over. It lies beyond the emerging scene at Ahangama, further still from the old walled city of Galle.
A short way west, Ahangama has quietly become the most considered stretch of this coast. Roastery coffee, a handful of good kitchens, design-led guesthouses and a small creative community have gathered there over recent years without yet losing the ease that drew them. It gives Sevana a refined neighbour close at hand, and somewhere for the evening that feels current rather than touristic.
The site is jungle. Mature canopy, a natural gradient falling toward the light, the sound of birds before the sound of anything else. Before it is a home it is already a place, and the design begins by listening to what is there rather than clearing it away. This is the world Sevana turns inward to: private, green, and still.
Forty minutes along the coast is Galle. Its fort, a walled city on a headland above the sea, is among the best preserved in Asia and the cultural anchor of the whole south, with galleries, restaurants and boutique hotels within its ramparts. Galle is the reassurance beneath the wildness: history, permanence, and a sense of place that has held for three centuries.
The ocean is a few minutes away. This part of the south is known, among those who look for it, for reef breaks that are some of the most consistent on the island, drawing travellers who plan around water and weather rather than noise. You do not need to surf to feel the benefit of it. It means a coastline that stays protected, uncrowded, and valued for what it already is. The beaches are long, palm-backed, and mostly empty outside the season.

Getting There
The south is far easier to reach than its character suggests. The expressway brings Colombo's airport within roughly two and a half hours, and the coastal railway, one of the more beautiful train journeys anywhere, runs through Midigama itself. Close enough to arrive without effort. Far enough to feel away.
