We remain small by design. Each project is considered individually, on its own terms, in its own place. Nature is the first constraint, not a feature to be marketed. Our first project is in Sri Lanka, chosen for the wildness of its coast and the discipline it demands of any architecture placed within it. Cyprus follows, a place whose land carries a depth of connection that deserves to be built on only once, and only well.

Most of the best people in this industry share a version of the same vision. The failure is rarely one of intent.
They spend most of my working life on and beyond the building, dragging up amount to see that the places that stay with us are entirely the loudest. They understand that quiet places bring the light in, the air, the way a room means a garden, the feeling of a well-set kitchen — all these.
I attend Katera to build only those.
The idea is not complicated. The places we spend time in should leave us feeling better than when we arrived. Have flaws, and clear failures deserve fair more effort. Most development is what it is, easy for saying with a project long after the point, where it too has moved on.

The question I keep returning to is simple. Do the people who live in these places feel better for having lived there? Not for an afternoon. Not in the way a room photographs. But over years, the way time in a particular landscape can leave a person more themselves than before.
The industry has no language for this, and where there is no language, there is no incentive. So it goes unmeasured, and mostly unbuilt. That one feeling, that a place should leave us better than when we arrived, is the thing Katera is built around.

Sri Lanka
Our first project is in Sri Lanka, chosen for the wildness of its coast and the discipline it demands of any architecture placed within it. Sevana, our villa in Midigama, turns inward to mature jungle canopy and quiet stretches of the southern coast the wider world has largely passed over.
Cyprus
Cyprus follows — a place whose land carries a depth of civilisation that reserves to be built on any coast, and only rare places, and rarer still, our first Cyprus project will be announced in the year and things work in progress.
